On August 27, 2026, Nomura/Instinet downgraded Vipshop Holdings Limited from Buy to Neutral and reduced its price target to $14.00 from $20.00. Vipshop is a leading off-price retailer in China that sells branded products through its online platform and physical outlet stores. At the time of the downgrade, its stock was trading at approximately $13.41.

Nomura cited concerns about the company’s weakening business outlook, particularly the health and earnings trajectory of its core online apparel business. The firm believes these pressures could limit Vipshop’s ability to maintain its current level of capital returns. Vipshop has committed to returning 75% of its prior-year non-GAAP net income to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases in 2025 and 2026. Nomura’s downgrade report noted that the sustainability of these returns will depend on the performance of the core business.

The downgrade followed Vipshop’s second-quarter 2026 results. Total net revenue declined to RMB24.7 billion from RMB25.8 billion in the prior-year quarter. Gross profit fell to RMB5.8 billion from RMB6.1 billion, while gross margin edged down to 23.3% from 23.5%.

Income from operations decreased to RMB1.5 billion from RMB1.7 billion, while the operating margin fell to 6.2% from 6.6%. Non-GAAP operating income also declined to RMB2.0 billion from RMB2.4 billion, and the corresponding margin contracted to 8.1% from 9.3%.

Customer activity weakened as well. The number of active customers decreased to 42.3 million from 43.5 million, while total orders fell to 182.4 million from 193.0 million. Management attributed the results partly to subdued consumer demand and emphasized its focus on loyal customers, margin health, merchandising, and customer retention.

Despite the weaker operating performance, GAAP net income attributable to shareholders increased 189.1% to RMB4.3 billion. However, this increase was primarily driven by a one-time RMB5.79 billion investment gain associated with the listing of a commercial real estate investment trust. Non-GAAP net income fell to RMB392.2 million from RMB2.1 billion, partly because of a one-time withholding-tax adjustment related to historical dividend distributions.
