J.M. Smucker (NYSE: SJM) Delivers Strong Q1, BTIG Reiterates Buy Rating

The J.M. Smucker Company is a major producer of packaged foods. Its well-known brands are found in many homes, covering categories like coffee, pet foods, and fruit spreads. J.M. Smucker operates within the competitive Food - Miscellaneous industry, where it competes with other large food manufacturers for shelf space and consumer loyalty.

On August 26, 2026, analyst firm BTIG confirmed its "Buy" rating for J.M. Smucker, with the stock priced at $130.81. As highlighted by TheFly, BTIG also increased its price target for the company to $150. This positive view is based on the company's strong financial health and the expectation that it will buy back its own stock.

This outlook is supported by J.M. Smucker's recent first-quarter results. The company reported adjusted earnings of $3.24 per share, which is a 71% jump from the previous year and much higher than the $2.22 analysts expected. Revenue also increased by 5% to $2.2 billion, beating the $2.13 billion consensus estimate.

BTIG noted that stock buyback activity is likely. A buyback is when a company uses its cash to repurchase its own shares from the market, which can help increase the stock's price. This is supported by J.M. Smucker's strong free cash flow of $337.30 million, which was significantly above the $115.00 million analysts had projected.

The company's profitability has also seen major improvements. Gross profit, the profit made after subtracting the costs of producing and selling its products, more than doubled to $979.60 million. This represents a 106% increase from the same period last year and expanded the company's gross margin to 44.1%.
