Analyst Downgrades SM Energy (NYSE: SM) Ahead of Earnings Report

SM Energy is a leading independent oil and gas company. Following a strategic merger with Civitas, SM Energy is now one of the top-10 independent energy producers in the United States. This merger is expected to generate $375.00 million in yearly cost savings and create a more diverse and profitable asset base.

On August 3, 2026, Jefferies analyst Stephanie Dossmann downgraded the company to a "Hold" rating. As highlighted by StreetInsider, she set a new price target for SM Energy at $16.00. At the time of the rating, the stock's price was $32.52, which represents a potential downside of approximately 50.80% for investors.

This analyst downgrade comes just before the company's earnings release on August 5. As highlighted by Zacks Investment Research, analysts expect SM Energy to report a key financial metric, Earnings Per Share (EPS), of $1.93. EPS shows how much profit a company makes for each share of its stock. This forecast would be a 28.67% increase from the same quarter last year.

The company's projected revenue is also expected to grow significantly. The forecast is for revenue to reach $2.01 billion, a 153.16% increase year-over-year. SM Energy plans to use 80% of its strategic free cash flow, the cash left after paying for operations and investments, to reduce its debt.

Despite a recent 8.71% drop in its share price to $30.30, the stock had previously gained 26.01%, performing better than its sector. Over the past 52 weeks, SM Energy's stock has traded between a low of $17.45 and a high of $35.88. The company has a current market capitalization of around $7.80 billion.
