MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) Shifts Bitcoin Strategy Amidst Analyst Upgrade and Market Volatility

MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) is a business intelligence company that provides software and cloud-based services. It is more widely known for being the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin. Recently, MicroStrategy has shifted its strategy by selling a portion of its large Bitcoin holdings, treating the digital asset as a source of cash.

On July 7, 2026, analyst firm Barclays initiated coverage on MicroStrategy with an Overweight rating. This rating suggests that Barclays expects the stock to perform better than the average stock in its sector. The new rating is an upgrade from the firm's previous Hold rating, showing increased confidence from the analysts.

Despite the positive analyst view, MicroStrategy closed the latest session at $97.36, a 3.38% decline. The stock's daily trading range was between $96.96 and $103.56. This performance was weaker than the broader market, where major indices saw gains, as highlighted by Zacks.

This price movement follows a significant strategic change. As highlighted by the New York Post, MicroStrategy sold $216 million worth of Bitcoin. This sale signals a move away from its "never sell" policy, now using the digital asset as a source of liquidity, or easily accessible cash, during a market slump.

MicroStrategy has a market capitalization of approximately $28.92 billion, which is the total value of all its shares. Over the past year, the stock has traded between a low of $81.81 and a high of $457.22, showing significant price swings. The daily trading volume is currently 17.98 million shares.
